Lugging 10 grocery bags up three flights of stairs every week got Ben Rendo thinking there had to be an easier way to carry multiple bags. His big idea – the Mighty Handle – is a simple solution and the first product of Mighty Good Solutions.
To get started, Rendo sought the help of the Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC). He enrolled in the Kauffman FastTrac® NewVenture™ class taught by Rebecca Gubbels to write a business plan for his idea. Then he took SBTDC’s Pitching to Investors class for strategies to help him get funding. Rendo continues to work with Gubbels, a SBTDC business consultant, who he calls “a great leader to aspiring entrepreneurs.”
“We have faced the same challenges of many small businesses entering a new sector,” Rendo said. “Figuring out the most efficient uses of resources, mainly time and money is a continual learning process. One thing we have learned over the last four years is to develop products quickly and get them to market at competitive prices for our retail partners.”
Rendo and Anita Newton started Mighty Good Solutions in late 2012. Their patent-pending Mighty Handle and anchor design system distributes weight evenly allowing consumers to carry up to 50 pounds of shopping bags in one hand. The ergonomic design requires less effort, and with two twists, it locks the bags so the contents don’t spill in transit. It also works with other handled items, like paint cans.
Customers can find the Mighty Handle at more than 7,000 retailers, including Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond and Amazon.
