If you’re searching for that unique, hand-crafted item from a shop that knows its artists, head to Westport where Mid Coast Modern has recently opened a bigger store with even more design-centric creations.
Owner Matt Bramlette is excited about his move from the Crossroads to Westport. His new space is larger, which means more opportunities for a wider selection of artists’ wares.
At Mid Coast Modern, shoppers can find handmade and indie home goods, jewelry, apparel, artwork, candles, beard oil, macramé plant hangers, pillows, Kansas City prints, locally made cocktail mixers and the shop’s own handmade Bear Soap. About half of the goods are made locally, and the others are created by artists and crafters from around the country.
Bramlette is a graphic designer who formerly worked in advertising. When his company downsized and he found himself looking for another position, Bramlette decided to follow his dream of opening a retail store with a creative, maker style. But he needed help getting started. He applied for the dislocated workers program scholarship and attended Kauffman FastTrac® NewVenture™, a 5-week, intensive business start-up class taught by the UMKC Small Business & Technology Development Center.
“The greatest takeaway was that it made me more aware of the harsh reality of starting a business,” he said.
Last year, Mid Coast Modern was named a 2016 Rising Star of Entrepreneurship by the Missouri Small Business & Technology Centers. The company was selected from more than 2,500 clients served by the Missouri SBTDC. The award included legislative proclamations from the Missouri House of Representative and Missouri Senate.
Bramlette still receives ongoing business advice and resources from Rebecca Gubbels, an SBTDC business and program development consultant and FastTrac® NewVenture™ instructor.
“Rebecca from FastTrac continues to be a support even two years after I took the course. She checks in, offers advice and is a customer at our store,” Bramlette said. “This proves the UMKC Small Business and Technology Development Center and their FastTrac program really do have the entrepreneur’s success at heart.”
