Basics of Writing a Business Plan

Start your business planning, or ramp up your game plan, with this three-hour class on Basics of Writing a Business Plan. Designed for current and aspiring business owners, this class is perfect for entrepreneurs who need to create a business plan, but have little or no knowledge of how to get started. Learn the key elements of a basic plan and how it can be a useful management tool.

Participants will get tips and guidelines on writing styles and formats that produce polished, professional plans. Business counselors will facilitate class discussions to help participants consider individual situations, opportunities and additional valuable resources.

Cash Flow Management: 99 problems, but cash ain’t one

Turn financial statements into useful management tools, and take a close look at where cash comes from in a small business. This will help business owners see the day-to-day operations more clearly and to identify and correct cash flow problems. At the end of the session, participants will be able to identify key information on cash flow statements and follow the path of cash as it travels through the company. Examine actual case studies to identify successful cash flow strategies and find the most common “gobblers” of cash in any business.

Construction Business Management

Building professionals can create a business growth strategy designed specifically for their industry in the Construction Business Management class. Using their current operations framework, business owners will actively work to develop a plan that significantly improves business performance. Facilitators are knowledgeable entrepreneurs who are attuned to the issues that influence the business decisions in the construction industry.

Specifically, participants will learn how to:

FastTrac® NewVenture™

Do you dream of owning your own business, and are you ready to take the deep dive into business feasibility planning?

The FastTrac® NewVenture™ program helps aspiring entrepreneurs look at all aspects of their business idea, exploring the feasibility of their new venture and learning how to develop a viable business plan. This “gold standard” business plan development program is fast-paced, interactive and energizing.

As an affiliate of Kauffman FastTrac®, the UMKC Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) offers the program in an accelerated time frame to let potential entrepreneurs get started with their businesses as soon as possible. Guest speakers and entrepreneurs bring their real-world experience to make topics come alive.

Participants develop their business plan through group activities and coaching from professional business counselors. The workbook has step-by-step activities and in-depth information. FastTrac® participants also have access to business plan and financial templates online. Participants don’t just learn about business, they work on their own business venture throughout the program.

Participants will learn:

  • The pros and cons of being an entrepreneur
  • Start-up issues including financial, legal, marketing and management
  • How to research competitors, identify target market customers and determine distribution models
  • To develop a business plan that determines the financial viability of the business idea

To help ensure long-term success after completion of the program, one-on-one business coaching assistance can continue at no additional cost through the UMKC SBTDC.

Ice House Entrepreneurship Program 

Are you an aspiring entrepreneur with a business idea, but don’t know where to start?

The Ice House Entrepreneurship Program combines classroom and online course work to teach eight essentials of an entrepreneurial mindset using the business canvas process to inspire and engage participants. Hearing from unlikely, yet successful entrepreneurs, participants will learn to evaluate business opportunities from a practical method inspired by the life story of Clifton Taulbert.

This course is a revolutionary new learning program designed to inspire and engage participants in the fundamental aspects of an entrepreneurial mindset and the unlimited opportunities it can provide. The overall objective is to empower learners through entrepreneurial thinking and immerse them in experiences that will enable them to develop entrepreneurial skills. With market testing, participants will use a canvas tool to test assumptions outside of traditional business planning.
